Visionaries, Startups, and Small Business whether they be formal or informal are the lifeblood of an economy. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
My mother from the time she was a little girl has always wanted to own her own double story house. When I turned two my parents made the decision to be to build their dream house from the ground up. All of my mom’s building plans incorporated her double story dream, unfortunately, the size of their purse could not cater for this. As a compromise, they made the decision to build a single level house and then later to expand.
It took my parents ten years to complete building the single level home and year in year out she would go on and on and one about one day she would build her double story vision. I grew up thinking this woman is dreamer obsessed with the impossible. I certainly could not understand the madness in her thinking, ten years to build a single level modest three bedroom house, TEN YEARS they hustled to finish one level. They still had three children to raise and to add insult to injury the economic situation in Zimbabwe took a dive from good to worse as the years went by.
As the years went by, my mom sounded more and more like a broken record…”when I have my double story house.” She even went to the extent of buying furniture for her so called dream house and whenever she started talking about her dream house, we would roll our eyes and think here we go again. How could she possibly believe that it will happen in this lifetime especially when it took them ten years to build the one level?
Fast forward 18 years later, my father says to my mom the kids have finished university, we have managed to pay off our debt and we have some savings do you still want your double story. It took them just under a year to renovate the house and have the second level added on. It was a Friday afternoon when the contractors told my mother that the house was complete. We did not sleep that night, we cleaned every corner top to bottom of the newly added wing. The expression on the contractors faces when they came back to pick up their tools the next day was priceless…
There could not believe this was the same empty house they had completed yesterday. It looked homely and everything fits into place. They asked my mom when she had had time to buy all this furniture and even have curtains done. Her reply was simple “I have had my plan for 28 years, I have been buying pieces of furniture and material over the years. I have never lost sight of my purpose… one day I will have my double story house.”
My mother kept up with the latest trends, she transformed with the times and yet her purpose has remained rooted in having that double story house. What I know ~ Purpose without resilience is like buying your dream car and not put fuel in it. What is fuelling your dream? What is keeping you going in times of adversity?
“With the double story complete what now? The place is too big for you and dad, we have all grown up and moved out what now?” I asked my mom. She simply smiled and replied on my darling I can transform it into anything that I want my double story house to be… Realizing my goal of having this house was just only the beginning. Now that I am older and you have all moved out, I can use the house to also showcase my interior designs to my clients. I was speechless ~ You are the creator of your destiny, it only has to make sense to you today for the rest of the world to see your vision tomorrow.
Never be swayed by the naysayers, Never let excuses of being the captain of your ship. Do not delay, do not second guess yourself, you have you and you are your greatest asset. If you truly believe in yourself and guard your company’s vision and be steadfast in your unwavering faith ~ then what are 28 years compared to the moment when you see your dream come to a reality.
As Winston Churchill once said, “You create your own universe as you go along.” Visionaries, Startups, and Small Business whether they be formal or informal are the lifeblood of any economy. These are the people who despite the odds have stayed true to themselves and chosen to go change the world. Where you are today is a matter of circumstance but where you will be tomorrow now that is a matter of your choice ~ Possibility Doers Craft their own Destiny ~ Hazel Kayiya.
